The story
The watchmaker at his bench, a long-case clock standing behind him like a colleague — the portrait of a profession rather than a person. The bench is the true subject: the small vice, the files, the work held close to the window light, because before electricity the trade lived by the sun it was built to replace. Of all the images in this house, this one says most plainly where every watch began: with a person, seated, being patient at a scale most eyes never see.
