The story

A weight-driven alarm clock, exploded into its parts and engraved with the Encyclopédie's characteristic patience — every wheel, pallet, and cord given its letter, every letter its explanation. The alarm is the oldest complication of all: the clock that does not merely tell time but acts on it, striking a sleeper awake. Here that small mechanical will is anatomized, line by burin line, so that any reader of 1760s France could see exactly how a machine keeps an appointment.
