About the house
A complication, in a watchmaker’s vocabulary, is anything a watch does beyond telling the hour — a calendar, a chime, a map of the moon. The Complication is a curated house of exactly that surplus: the record of measured time as art. Thirty-two pieces, not thirty-two thousand, from the 1530s to the 1900s — the Encyclopédie’s engraved watchmakers, Huygens’s pendulum, Harrison’s chronometer drawn to the tooth, the astronomical tower clocks, the skull watches and painted enamels of the great museum cabinets, and the trade’s own ornamented paper.
The originals sleep in the great collections — the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Rijksmuseum, the Musée Carnavalet, the Wellcome Collection, the Library of Congress, the Cleveland Museum of Art. Every piece we sell is a verified public-domain or open-access work, and its source page and license are printed on its product page — you can check our provenance in one click, which is precisely the point. What we sell is the curation, the scholarship, the print quality, and the honesty: the artwork is never cropped, and no size is offered that its real scan cannot carry.
We are a house of Provenance, part of the Painted family, and a sibling to The Firmament and Cartographer’s Dream. We are unaffiliated with any watch manufacturer, past or present; nothing here trades on a living mark. Every factual claim on this site about a piece — who made it, when, what it changed — is verified before it is published. Precision is the subject; it is also the policy.
